You are an adviser, a counsellor, a cheerleader, a boundary-setter, and on any given day you can be both the best and worst person in the world (if your students had any say, that is!).

I am directly accessing parts of the network that impact the customer, results of the changes I make can be immediately seen and felt.

Don’t feel like you’re locked into your choices early on in your career – take it from someone who had a career change 10 years into his first career.

Build your soft skills with an emphasis on being able to communicate your ideas across. These are really valuable to have in any industry.

I worked full time in this job and studied full time simultaneously at Southern Cross University because I did not want to drive forklifts all my life.

The graduate cohort is a wonderful source of social support, and my mentor, buddy, and supervisors have been great sources of insight, guidance, and perspective throughout the year.

The coolest part of my job is the level of responsibility and autonomy I have in completing my work. A lot of the work I have undertaken has a direct effect on taxpayers, and my decisions are trusted and enforced.

Anything from international negotiations, running seminars, inputting into policy, writing briefings, creating databases and analytical tools, being part of committees and consultation meetings – it’s all so diverse and this is the part of my job I love the most.
